Timeless design and traditional craftsmanship made in Germany meet cradle-to-cradle certified leather tanning
The scent of leather mixes with subtle fragrance of olive leaves when you enter the Ackermann manufactory. It
surrounds the big punch press and rattling sewing machines. For the new ECO collection the designers Beate
Sedlacek and Karl-Henning Hohmann work with olive leather. It is tanned with a cradle-to-cradle certified tanning
agent made from olive leave extracts. Karl-Henning Hohmann explains: „sustainability starts in the design process
and we always look for new innovative materials“. In 2016 the two designers found olive leather and shaped a new
line of bags and backpacks for a mobile and sustainability-loving generation. The sense of simplicity in the design
combined with the unique quality of the leather makes the bags companions for years to come. „We worked hard to
make our design even more functional and light“ says Beate Sedlacek while she opens an elegant brown backpack.
Olive leather: Sustainability innovation in leather tanning made in Germany
Olive leather was developed in Germany. It is the innovative and sustainable way of tanning leather. After years of
research for plant based tanning agents, scientists at the centre for leather innovation in Reutlingen managed to
extract the precious tanning agents from olive leaves. The leaves are a rarely used by-product of olive cultivation
and highly available in Europe. Traditionally, farmers burn them on the field causing Co2-emissions. Using the leaves
prevents these emissions and offers an additional source of income for farmers. In addition, the fact that the tanning
agent is biodegradable makes it the sustainable alternative in leather tanning. For this effort, the tanning agent
was awarded with the cradle-to-cradle gold certificate. However, all this becomes a minor matter, when you touch
olive leather. The stable haptic and elegant sheen makes you want to hold on to the bag. „We worked together with
our tanneries to get the ideal finish for our designs“ says Hohmann, explaining the unique haptic and quality of the
