 Press Releases

  • In collaboration with Nespresso, Caran d’Ache is presenting a new 849 ballpoint pen in limited edition made using the aluminium from Nespresso recycled capsules. This exclusive writing instrument was born of the encounter between two iconic Swiss companies, sharing common values: sustainable development, innovation and Swiss design quality.

In 2015, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Nespresso’s commitment to recycle its aluminium capsules, the company launched its Second Life project to breathe new life into its used capsules through a range of iconic Swiss products. Having already released a Victorinox Swiss Army knife and a Zena vegetable peeler, Nespresso partners with Caran d’Ache to create a special 849, using recycled capsules’ aluminium for the body of the pen.

Caran d’Ache Research & Development laboratory went through numerous tests to create an exclusive alloy using the aluminium from recycled capsules, meeting the quality requirements of the 849. A writing instrument that is both robust and sustainable while boasting a timeless look.

Every year, a capsule colour is selected to decorate the product parts of the
Second Life collection. In 2018, the “Dharkan” capsule is called on to lend its dark blue colour to the 849. The “Made with recycled Nespresso Capsules” label reinforces the authenticity of this limited edition. The 100% recycled and recyclable packaging strengthens the responsible approach adopted Caran d’Ache and Nespresso.

Rediscover the pleasure of writing and tasting coffee with the 849 Nespresso. The promise of creative moments reflecting a responsible and sustainable approach!

The “849 Nespresso” limited edition will be available in July 2018 at your favorite boutiques.

  • La Maison Caran d’Ache, in collaboration with the Girard Studio and Vitra, introduces the 849 Alexander Girard – a ballpoint pen in a limited edition collection that combines the know-how of the Geneva-based writing and drawing instruments company with the playful and emblematic patterns of Alexander Girard. Developed as the newest addition to the Vitra Accessories Collection, which already includes several pieces inspired by the designer, the 849 Alexander Girard also features in the Maison Caran d’Ache office line.

Alexander Girard was one of the leading figures in American design during the postwar era. While textile design was the primary focus of Girard's oeuvre, he was also admired for his work in the graphic arts as well as furniture, exhibition and interior design. Girard brought a sensuous playfulness to twentieth-century design that had been absent from the austere aesthetic of classic modernism.

Since the earliest days of his youth, Girard was accustomed to taking a writing instrument along wherever he went. He always carried one in the inner pocket of his tweed jacket, ready to jot down a quick note or sketch out an idea. Moreover, he usually had some sort of paper on hand – very often notepads from hotels where he had stayed. He liked their thin sheets and the practical dimensions that fit in his trouser pockets, and eventually acquired a whole collection of them. Whether with a short text or in the form of a drawing: he knew how to express himself with a pen.

    About the 849 Alexander Girard

The 849 Alexander Girard is a trusty everyday companion whose decor is inspired by the designer’s iconic patterns and motifs. The limited-edition collection includes two models: The first one sports the geometric pattern “Double Triangle” in white gloss on a matt black body. The second, more feminine version features the “Check Stripes” in pink on a white gloss body. The metal case supplied with the 849 pens is adorned with the designer’s iconic motif “The Eyes” in either pink or blue. The colourful and expressive images were selected by Caran d’Ache and Vitra in cooperation with the Girard family from the vast array of graphic works in the Girard estate, which is preserved in the Vitra Design Museum archive.

Instantly identifiable as the ultimate emblem of the Maison Caran d’Ache, the 849 pen has a hexagonal shape and the comfortable proportions of an iconic model. 849 pens are designed and manufactured in the Caran d’Ache workshops with the greatest care and in line with the standards of the Swiss Made label. The performance of the Goliath cartridge, capable of writing up to 600 flawless A4 pages, complements the timeless design of the 849.

The 849 Alexander Girard Collection will be available in spring 2018 at selected Caran d’Ache and Vitra stores and associated dealers.

    About the Vitra Accessories Collection

The Vitra Accessories Collection encompasses the growing portfolio of design objects, accessories and textiles produced by the Swiss furniture company. The collection is based on classic patterns and objects conceived by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Alexander Girard. In addition to these classics, it also includes pieces by prominent contemporary figures like Hella Jongerius, Jasper Morrison and the Bouroullec brothers. Authenticity, joy and playfulness are hallmarks of the Vitra Accessories Collection.

Cheerful colours, abstract forms, geometric patterns, unique colour constellations: that is the world of Alexander Girard. Vitra works intensively with the archive of Alexander Girard, and a number of his designs and motifs are featured in the Vitra Accessories Collection.

  • To mark the occasion, 30 new limited-edition colours have been added to the range of 120 water-soluble pencils. With this collection of 150 Supracolor Soft shades, the Swiss company specializing in writing and drawing instruments continues to demonstrate its passion for infinite creativity and technical excellence.

Thirty years – thirty new, exclusive colours

The development of the thirty new, original shades is the result of several months of research and creative reflection by the master craftsmen at the Geneva-based company. Calling on Swiss manufacturing tradition, they took up the technical challenge of incorporating infinitely pure, rare or mineral pigments.

Carried out with genuine passion, this experimental work gave rise to a selection of original, intense colours ranging from cobalt violet through Naples ochre and ultramarine pink to terracotta – evocative names that immediately stimulate the imagination!

Intended for creative spirits, this range was developed in collaboration with artists who are brand ambassadors. The new colours were carefully selected to meet their artistic needs: a “nude” palette to bring portraits alive and an “earthy-tone” palette ideal for reproducing all the features of a landscape. In great demand among illustrators, a range of dark colours such as dark sap green, crimson aubergine and dark ultramarine has also been created.

There are almost ten mono-pigment shades, guaranteeing the utmost colour purity. The opacity of the colours also means the products are very long-lasting.

The quality of a colour lies in its purity. It must contain a limited number of pigments,” states Eric Vitus, Head of the colours research and development laboratory.

Supracolor Soft, the marriage of creativity and excellence

The Supracolor Soft collection is a worthy ambassador of the expertise and passion of the craftsmen at Caran d’Ache. The brightness of the colours and their unique covering power guarantee the quality of the range. Thanks to a high level of lightfastness, pencil drawings can be faded, blurred, textured by rubbing the lead on sandpaper or created as a full watercolour.

The Supracolor Soft collection ensures versatility for a wide range of uses: while it is usually used for portraits or landscapes, it is also the ideal instrument for technical drawing, colouring or even urban sketching. It is also water-soluble to create a watercolour impression or can be used dry.

With its elegant lines and the originality and force of its pigments, the new Supracolor Soft range is the perfect companion for the art of drawing so dear to the centenary brand. Boasting more than a hundred years of valuable know-how, Caran d’Ache designs and manufactures its instruments in its Geneva workshops in compliance with the quality requirements of the Swiss Made label and ecological standards and certifications.

From April 2018, the 30 exclusive Supracolor Soft colours will also be available in a stylish wooden box along with 30 existing shades from the standard collection.

  • Geneva, January 2018 – Caran d’Ache pays homage to the fine arts in its “Chinese calendar” collection, designed to bring the legend of the symbols of the Chinese zodiac to life. The new “Year of the Dog” limited edition carries on the tradition of this collection of exceptional writing instruments to celebrate the advent of the Chinese Year of the Dog in 2018.

The “Year of the Dog” writing instruments embody the precious arts of figurative engraving and authentic Chinese lacquer, long cultivated in the Caran d’Ache workshops. Fruits of the master craftsmen’s creative passion and their untiring search for perfection, these veritable works of art bear witness to the perfect union of high technicality and ancestral arts and crafts.

2018 under the sign of the dog

According to legend, the powerful Jade Emperor invited the animals to a mysterious gathering on New Year’s Eve. Only twelve animals accepted the invitation. The Emperor then gave each animal a unique gift: henceforth, a year would be dedicated to them and would bear their name.

In the Chinese zodiac, the dog symbolises loyalty, integrity and devotion to just causes. Its profound intelligence, sensitive soul and alert mind often make it the defender of universal values. A loyal friend and unwavering travelling companion, this pathfinder for peace brings balance and harmony to the world. Favourable to stability and positive change, the Chinese Year of the Dog promises the union of the very best energies.

A symbolic creation in the finest tradition of Chinese lacquer

In keeping with the aesthetics of previous limited editions dedicated to the symbols of the Chinese zodiac, the “Year of the Dog” revives the splendour of genuine Chinese lacquer. A mastery of this ancestral technique and extensive know-how in terms of precision engraving ensure the master craftsmen at Caran d’Ache enjoy great freedom when creating their designs while maintaining the integrity of the lacquered surface.

And so the sleek shape of the dog emerges in grey Chinese lacquer, creating an elegant contrast with the deep black of the lacquer covering the writing instrument.

The finely engraved figurative lines and contours express all the agility and elegance of the dog. The typically Asian character of the design further underlines its rippling coat and the arching of its slender body. The writing instruments’ attributes are coated in yellow gold. The combination of gold and grey symbolises the union of energy and reason, light and awareness, signs of balance and good omens in Asia. Each writing instrument is authenticated by the calligraphic symbol of the dog and by the red Caran d’Ache Chinese seal which is supposed to bring good luck.

The “Year of the Dog” edition is limited to 888 items in homage to Chinese culture, in which the number “888” is the ultimate sign of good luck.

  • Geneva, April 2018 - The Maison Caran d’Ache presents the 1010 Timekeeper limited edition, inspired by the encounter between Haute Ecriture and luxury watchmaking. For this timeless limited edition, the Geneva-based Maison pays homage to watch dials, repositories of the identity of exceptional timepieces.

1010 Timekeeper, an encounter between Haute Ecriture and luxury watchmaking

Since it was founded in 1915, Caran d’Ache has passionately designed and created writing instruments combining elegance, audacity and innovation. In its Geneva workshops, the Maison creates exceptional 100% Swiss Made pieces that reflect the know-how of its master-artisans. The 1010 collection from the Maison Caran d’Ache celebrates the encounter between Haute Ecriture and luxury watchmaking. Two art forms inextricably linked with Swiss heritage, embodying ingenuity and technical virtuosity. After two years of research and development with Swiss watch design experts, the 1010 Timekeeper limited edition marks the second chapter in this collection, ten years after the 1010 Chrono limited edition. A homage to watch dials that faithfully accompany the march of time through the ages. An Haute Ecriture journey that instantly plunges you into the graphic world of luxury watchmaking.

A limited edition that transposes the aesthetics of watchmaking culture

The artisans of Maison Caran d’Ache rose to the technical challenge of transposing the complex construction of a dial onto a cylindrical shape. Overall, 72 components are layered and assembled with millimetric precision inside the transparent cage on this limited edition with a timeless design. Steel hands – tinted blue by thermal treatment – appear to turn on their axis. The end of one of these hands is red – a subtle reminder of the emblematic colour of Caran d’Ache. Roman numerals indicate the passage of the hours and a window inspired by the moon phase opening on exceptional timepieces reveals the ink of the piston pump. The clip on these writing instruments, available as fountain pens and roller pens, recalls the design of the Dauphine hands

    Technical challenges and mechanical details

The 1010 Timekeeper limited edition displays its technical dimension on the silver- and rhodium-plated body of the 500 carefully crafted pieces. Several elements of the exclusive know-how of the Maison Caran d’Ache’s master-artisans are brought together to create this unique writing instrument: guillochage, engraving, manual polishing, lacquering and PVD treatment. A semi-transparent sheath in lightweight and resistant polished synthetic glass surrounds the body of the writing instrument, lending it a brilliant appearance. The 18-carat-gold, rhodium-plated fountain pen nib is delicately engraved with the 1010 hands.

A black lacquered box, similar to that of a watch case, protects the 1010 Timekeeper limited edition against the ravages of time. Inside, the timeless writing instrument is presented with two silver- and rhodium-plated caps engraved with a generic numbering “1 in 500 pieces” to be changed according to the user’s desire. They are reminiscent of a watch strap, one with a chain-link effect drum pattern, the other echoing the codes of watch crowns. Within the box, an inkwell has been specially designed for this limited edition.

Available as a fountain pen and roller pen, the writing instruments in the 1010 Timekeeper Limited Edition are entirely designed and produced in the Maison Caran d’Ache’s Geneva workshops.

The collection is available from mid-May 2018 in a selection of points of sale and Caran d’Ache boutiques as well as from the eBoutique.

  • Nespresso and Caran d’Ache present the “849 Nespresso” ballpoint pen made from the recycled aluminium of coffee capsules

Geneva/Lausanne, May 2018 – Driven by the shared values of innovation, quality and the conservation of the environment, Nespresso and Caran d’Ache have joined forces to create a limited edition ballpoint pen with a timeless look from the recycled aluminium of coffee capsules. A new addition to the Caran d’Ache “Office” collection, this ballpoint pen is part of the Second Life project launched by Nespresso in 2016 to promote the recycling of aluminium capsules by offering tangible proof of the new life they can enjoy after they have been collected and recycled.

Nespresso and Caran d’Ache, an alliance focusing on sustainability

In developing this limited edition, the two Swiss companies have taken up the technical challenge of using the aluminium of recycled Nespresso capsules to create an alloy retaining the intrinsic qualities of the 849 model from Caran d’Ache. Produced in the Geneva workshops of Caran d’Ache, this ballpoint pen displays the shiny dark blue colour of the Nespresso Dharkan capsules. A stylish accessory that is fashionable, elegant and responsible.

“We are pleased to join forces with such a prestigious company as Caran d’Ache to offer the general public tangible proof of what can be achieved with Nespresso capsules returned by consumers after use. As well as being a ballpoint pen boasting Swiss Made quality, it is also a powerful message sent to consumers everywhere showing them that their contribution to recycling our capsules is essential in offering them a second life,” states Niels Kuijer, Director of Nespresso Switzerland.

“This collaboration is in keeping with our philosophy which has been founded on sustainable development, innovation and creativity for more than 100 years. Caran d’Ache is delighted to be a valued partner of Nespresso in this unique project which has given rise to this fashionable everyday design accessory,” adds Carole Hubscher, President of Caran d’Ache.

The second life of Nespresso capsules

A naturally-occurring element which is infinitely recyclable while retaining its original physical characteristics, aluminium preserves all of the freshness, taste and quality of Nespresso coffees without the need for additional packaging. If they are collected and recycled, Nespresso capsules can quite literally be reborn in a plethora of different shapes. For more than 27 years, as part of its global sustainable approach, Nespresso has managed its own aluminium capsule collection and recycling system in order to breathe new life into its capsules.

Continuously collected in the 2,700 Nespresso collection points in Switzerland or through the free “Recycling at Home” collection service, the capsules are transported to Moudon (VD), where the aluminium is separated from the coffee. The coffee grounds are transformed into renewable energy and natural fertiliser in a biogas installation in the village of Valbroye (VD), while the aluminium is melted down and used to manufacture new products. After the Victorinox Swiss Army knife and the Zena vegetable peeler in 2016, the 849 Nespresso ballpoint pen is the third iconic and typically Swiss object to be created from recycled aluminium Nespresso capsules.

The “849 Nespresso”, a designer writing instrument par excellence

Instantly recognisable by its hexagonal shape, the 849 ballpoint pen is one of the true emblems of Caran d’Ache. Incorporating the precepts of industrial design and the company’s ergonomic principles, the puristic form of the 849 displays the ultra-comfortable proportions of an iconic model. Its timeless design is enhanced by the exceptional performance of the Goliath cartridge, capable of writing up to 600 pages of A4.

Designed and produced in Caran d’Ache’s Geneva workshops, the 849 Nespresso is the ultimate daily companion. To guarantee the quality of the emblematic 849 pen, the alloy created from the melted down

Nespresso capsules has been subjected to rigorous testing during the production phase in the company’s workshops before receiving the thumbs-up.

The pen’s shiny aspect is obtained by means of a micro beading blasting process and electrostatic treatment. The body of the pen is engraved with “Made with recycled Nespresso capsules”, underlining the unique character of this limited edition. The fully-recyclable cardboard packaging without glue enhances the innovative and eco-responsible approach adopted by Caran d’Ache and Nespresso.

The limited edition 849 Nespresso ballpoint pen from Caran d’Ache will go on sale in Switzerland and around the world on 28 May 2018 and will be available from Caran d’Ache points of sale and boutiques as well as the eBoutique.

Caran d’Ache is celebrating 20 years of its iconic Léman collection. For the Léman collection, Caran d’Ache has drawn its inspiration from the landscapes of Lake Geneva in the design of these writing instruments with elegant curves and vibrant colours....

  • An anniversary edition embodying the Léman collection more powerfully than ever. A distillation of elegance, equilibrium and technical sophistication. Caran d’Ache subtly develops this timeless black classic in a new version featuring an original yet clearly identifiable style that will remain an ultimate classic. The refinement of the finishing can be admired through the transparent black lacquered outer layer, representing a rare art perfectly mastered by the artisans of the Maison. Thanks to an astonishing subtly graded “Clous de Paris” hobnail pattern, the depth of the lacquer reveals an inimitable guilloché motif.

Technical sophistication: the writing block of the pen and the cap pick up the famous ”Clous de Paris” hobnail pattern. Subtly graded (increasingly smaller) reproductions of the motif adapt to the curves and the diameter of the writing block, while maintaining the classic “Clous de Paris” pyramid shape. Caran d’Ache once again highlights the expertise of its artisans by clothing the Léman collection in a mantle of light, reinterpreting the perception of black with an elegantly refined and masculine touch. A tribute to night-time and to the festive side of the anniversary edition. Four writing instruments: fountain pen, roller pen, ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil.
