Nespresso and Caran d’Ache present the “849 Nespresso” ballpoint pen made from the recycled aluminium of coffee capsules
Geneva/Lausanne, May 2018 – Driven by the shared values of innovation, quality and the conservation of the environment, Nespresso and Caran d’Ache have joined forces to create a limited edition ballpoint pen with a timeless look from the recycled aluminium of coffee capsules. A new addition to the Caran d’Ache “Office” collection, this ballpoint pen is part of the Second Life project launched by Nespresso in 2016 to promote the recycling of aluminium capsules by offering tangible proof of the new life they can enjoy after they have been collected and recycled.
Nespresso and Caran d’Ache, an alliance focusing on sustainability
In developing this limited edition, the two Swiss companies have taken up the technical challenge of using the aluminium of recycled Nespresso capsules to create an alloy retaining the intrinsic qualities of the 849 model from Caran d’Ache. Produced in the Geneva workshops of Caran d’Ache, this ballpoint pen displays the shiny dark blue colour of the Nespresso Dharkan capsules. A stylish accessory that is fashionable, elegant and responsible.
“We are pleased to join forces with such a prestigious company as Caran d’Ache to offer the general public tangible proof of what can be achieved with Nespresso capsules returned by consumers after use. As well as being a ballpoint pen boasting Swiss Made quality, it is also a powerful message sent to consumers everywhere showing them that their contribution to recycling our capsules is essential in offering them a second life,” states Niels Kuijer, Director of Nespresso Switzerland.
“This collaboration is in keeping with our philosophy which has been founded on sustainable development, innovation and creativity for more than 100 years. Caran d’Ache is delighted to be a valued partner of Nespresso in this unique project which has given rise to this fashionable everyday design accessory,” adds Carole Hubscher, President of Caran d’Ache.
The second life of Nespresso capsules
A naturally-occurring element which is infinitely recyclable while retaining its original physical characteristics, aluminium preserves all of the freshness, taste and quality of Nespresso coffees without the need for additional packaging. If they are collected and recycled, Nespresso capsules can quite literally be reborn in a plethora of different shapes. For more than 27 years, as part of its global sustainable approach, Nespresso has managed its own aluminium capsule collection and recycling system in order to breathe new life into its capsules.
Continuously collected in the 2,700 Nespresso collection points in Switzerland or through the free “Recycling at Home” collection service, the capsules are transported to Moudon (VD), where the aluminium is separated from the coffee. The coffee grounds are transformed into renewable energy and natural fertiliser in a biogas installation in the village of Valbroye (VD), while the aluminium is melted down and used to manufacture new products. After the Victorinox Swiss Army knife and the Zena vegetable peeler in 2016, the 849 Nespresso ballpoint pen is the third iconic and typically Swiss object to be created from recycled aluminium Nespresso capsules.
The “849 Nespresso”, a designer writing instrument par excellence
Instantly recognisable by its hexagonal shape, the 849 ballpoint pen is one of the true emblems of Caran d’Ache. Incorporating the precepts of industrial design and the company’s ergonomic principles, the puristic form of the 849 displays the ultra-comfortable proportions of an iconic model. Its timeless design is enhanced by the exceptional performance of the Goliath cartridge, capable of writing up to 600 pages of A4.
Designed and produced in Caran d’Ache’s Geneva workshops, the 849 Nespresso is the ultimate daily companion. To guarantee the quality of the emblematic 849 pen, the alloy created from the melted down
Nespresso capsules has been subjected to rigorous testing during the production phase in the company’s workshops before receiving the thumbs-up.
The pen’s shiny aspect is obtained by means of a micro beading blasting process and electrostatic treatment. The body of the pen is engraved with “Made with recycled Nespresso capsules”, underlining the unique character of this limited edition. The fully-recyclable cardboard packaging without glue enhances the innovative and eco-responsible approach adopted by Caran d’Ache and Nespresso.
The limited edition 849 Nespresso ballpoint pen from Caran d’Ache will go on sale in Switzerland and around the world on 28 May 2018 and will be available from Caran d’Ache points of sale and boutiques as well as the eBoutique.
