Collection: WILDWUCHS - Chamois deer leather
From the skin of the red deer, the finest of all leathers are obtained: the old-fashioned tanned deerskin. This velvety soft leather is produced by one of the oldest and most elaborate tanning processes called “sämisch”. In this process, which has been known for about 800 years, it takes up to one year for the soft and cloth-like leather to develop from the untanned animal skin.
A total of about 300 manual processing steps are required. The transient deerskin is tanned with cod oil as a tannic substance into durable leather. The cod oil is literally pressed into the hides by means of a mechanical process, the milling process. This is done, for example, with heavy wooden hammers.
The excess oil is washed out in a soda bath and the skins are air-dried for many weeks. In this repeating tanning process, which lasts several months, the skin is rolled and dried many times. Genuine “sämisch” leather has to mature, comparable to a noble whiskey. The natural characteristics of the skins are retained in this process. At the end of the process, the leather is dyed with natural colors of blue, red or yellow wood. The paint is applied on one side by hand and brushed into the leather. The yellow back of the leather remains colorless and is a sign of careful work.
