Our traditionally woven “Blongsong” fabrics which originated in Palembang (a small city in Indonesia), with beautiful motifs and bright colors woven combining silk and cotton threads can take up to 3 to 4 weeks to complete using traditional loom technique.
The motifs and patterns in “Blongsong” weavings are unique, the names of some of these patterns are Patut, Kembang, Kecil or Lepus.
Local weavers sometimes combine Blongsong and Songket motifs, which are called Blongsong Songket. Songket was traditionally woven using a loom, but now is mostly woven by machine. Songket woven in Palembang is renowned for the gold and silver threads that run throughout the fabric.
Songket has been traditionally woven in Southern Sumatra since the “Sriwijaya Kingdom” era. Weaving in the traditional style is very labor intensive, one weaving could take up to 4 or 6 weeks to produce.
There are 2 different styles of Songket woven in Palembang, Songket Lepus” which is woven completely using gold threads and Songket Tawur woven with much less. Some of the more traditional motif patterns are Bintang, Berantai, Lepus, and Nampan Perak.
