Founded in 2019 by Gauri Sharma, Amara was built on the belief that objects made by hand, from natural materials, using techniques passed down across generations, are worth far more than a trend cycle. Every piece has a maker behind it and a tradition it belongs to. We work directly with artisan communities across India, where this craft is both a livelihood and a living cultural inheritance. • Amara Announces Upcoming Documentary “Bamboo & Belief” (Jun 11, 2026)

  Amara, a social enterprise committed to preserving Indian craftsmanship while creating sustainable livelihoods, announces the upcoming release of its short documentary, “Bamboo & Belief,” coming in early August. The film captures the journey of tribal Paniya women in South India’s Nilgiris region, from underemployment to skill-based empowerment.

  Founded by former corporate executive turned social entrepreneur Gauri Sharma, Amara connects rural artisans with the global marketplace. “I’ve met women whose hands are shaped by years of labor — full of strength, yet with limited work to call their own. This documentary tells one of their stories,” says Sharma.

  In India, female labor force participation stands at 32.7%. The film shares hope, showing how Amara helps women reclaim their time, talent, and dignity.

  Filmed in the Nilgiris, the documentary follows a bamboo weaving initiative that began with three male trainees and grew into a collective of 20 women artisans creating baskets, lampshades, bangles, and stools. Their products are sold in tourist hubs like Ooty.

  With a workshop beside a village school, Amara has generated over 150 hours of paid training per month, allowing mothers to earn with dignity.

  The film invites viewers to support Amara’s mission: scale this model across India, preserve craft traditions, and empower women — one village at a time.

• Amara Launches the State of Being Collection, Developed with Design Studio (Jun 11, 2026)

  Channapatna's 200-year-old wood-turning craft meets Madras textile heritage in a new tabletop collection.

  Amara, a New Jersey-based wholesale social enterprise specializing in artisan-crafted home décor, has launched the State of Being Collection, developed in partnership with designer studio Moonj and introduced at NY NOW in February 2026 — drawing from 200 years of Channapatna lacquerware and 800 years of Madras textile history, reimagined entirely for the contemporary home.

  At the heart of the collection is a GI-certified craft tradition from Channapatna, Karnataka, historically known for handmade wooden toys. Here, those same techniques are redirected toward a contemporary kitchen and tabletop range. Artisans hand-turn locally sourced wood, apply natural lacquer extracted from trees, smooth each piece with cactus leaf and coconut oil, then hand-paint Madras check motifs by hand. A minimum 36-hour cure follows before finishing. The process is deliberate, and the objects reflect it.

  The collection spans a kitchen and tabletop range in wood alongside handloomed cotton textiles, united by a muted palette of sage, stone, and powder blue punctuated by vivid accent color — reflecting the design tension between structure and softness, the geometric and the fluid, the traditional and the contemporary.

  Each piece is conceived as functional art, where utility and craftsmanship coexist — rooted in tradition and designed for contemporary living.
