  Marrying Italian artisan craftsmanship and sustainability in a stylish way is no simple task—that is, for all but Sieme (wearesieme.com). With cardholders, wallets and handbags all handmade from repurposed luxury Italian leather, the brand is launching a summer collection this month, inspired by the delicate art of hand-macramé weaving discarded materials. “Because our bags are handcrafted 100% from rescued leather, each collection is inspired by the leather that is, in essence, another brand’s ‘trash,’” shares founder and Drexel alumna Cassandra Kane.   For the majority of people who can’t afford designer “investment pieces” that are timeless and high quality, fashion is about finding cheap and easy ways to replicate runway trends and designs. It’s anything but sustainable.

   

  “My aha moment with leather didn’t come until I was working in a factory, and it was a very small factory [after she studied at Florence’s prestigious Scuola di Cuoio] that makes high-end samples for runway shows in very small production and we were working for one specific brand and we ended up having to throw away 60 percent of the leather they ordered because they couldn’t accept it … it was a very natural leather and there were a lot of wrinkles and changes to the texture and they wouldn’t accept it,” she said. “And I was like, wait a second, and it really did click that if this is happening here, this must be happening on a massive scale.”
