  • Page Bookends by Block
A contemporary pair of bookends that evoke the anticipation of peeling open the first page of an enticing new book.<br />...

  • Books are so important to interiors, they are a connection to the past, reminders from different parts of our lives, they give us a sense of familiarity and security. When you unpack your books into a new home you have an immediate sense of place, they give a stark modern room a sense of history, they give a room character and substance.

Books are tactile, it is comforting to be surrounded by paper as a natural material, the colours of books and their graphic quality is an angle we all enjoy.

We took these principles as our starting point when designing our bookends, we wanted our bookends to have a connection to the books in the same special way books have a connection to our customers.

The bookends are laser cut from steel and then folded, this makes them extremely functional, the ‘peel’ is formed by hand giving the bookends a fragility that resembles paper. The bookends are painted with a matt paint which also echo’s the quality of paper. We chose a palette that is sympathetic to the numerous colours and graphics of the books we adore. The bookends are unique and clever but they are also understated and compliment our prized collection.

  • Origami Desk Clock by Block
An origami influenced clock stripped to its most minimal form. The vertical fold aligns the eye to 12 o’clock....

  • The latest clock collection from Block applies principal Origami folds to steel, creating shifting interactions between light and colour throughout the day.

‘Our starting point,’ says designer Tara Ashe, ‘was a paring back of clock design to its essential qualities. We realised early on in the process that the vertical line was fundamental to the measurement of time; that the human eye is habituated to seeing 12:00 with the subtlest of visual cues.’

Having recently taken a research trip in Japan, it was a logical progression for Tara to replace the line with a fold. ‘I returned from Japan feeling that I had visited a nation of designers’, she recalls, ‘I was fascinated by the beautiful precision I met in every aspect of Japanese life and particularly by the impact that could be achieved with a simple fold. In the Origami Fold Clock I wanted to experiment with the effect a fold would have on colour and its relationship to changes in light and shade.’
