  • PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – Consider the lowly mussel: Found in oceans and rivers throughout the world, revered in Belgium, and delicious with French fries, their uniquely elongated, asymmetrical shells make them one of nature’s most beautiful bivalves.

This winter, ARTĚL – the globally renowned producer of luxury crystal couture – celebrates these often-overlooked undersea creatures with MUSSELS, an exciting new design motif that emphasizes their sleek contours in a stylishly unexpected way.

Featuring a hand-sandblasted depiction of boldly striped mussel shells arranged in layers, MUSSELS is based on a vintage silver and enamel cigarette case designed by Koloman Moser, a co-founder of the early 20th-century community of Austrian artisans known as the Wiener Werkstätte, whose work is a frequent source of inspiration for ARTĚL’s founder, Karen Feldman.

“One of the things I like best about this striking new motif,” says Feldman, “is the way it works as both an abstract pattern and a depiction of actual mussel shells, which makes it that much more versatile in terms of fitting into a variety of home décor settings.” As for color choice, Feldman notes that “while it looks great in any color, MUSSELS is especially well suited for dark, neutral colors like Black or Smoke.”

Established in 1998 by American designer and entrepreneur Karen Feldman, ARTĚL specializes in handcrafted, functional crystal glassware of high design. The company takes its name from an early-20th-century collective of Czech artisans whose dedication to preserving the traditional methods of handcraftsmanship led them to reject industrial production techniques. ARTĚL carries on the spirit of these artisans and their commitment to producing – entirely by hand – lasting objects of impeccable quality, design, and functionality. ARTĚL’s innovative product line can be found on the shelves of Asprey, Christian Dior and Neiman Marcus, among other exclusive retailers.

  • PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – From “Old MacDonald” to George Orwell, farm animals have long occupied an iconic place in our culture. Even city slickers who’ve never sowed a seed or hoed a row have a deep appreciation for this special class of creatures and the vital role they play in keeping us fed.

This summer, ARTĚL – the globally renowned producer of luxury crystal couture – celebrates life down on the farm with the newly released BARNYARD collection, comprised of ten different motifs in different colors that are available either individually or as a set of ten glasses (sets include one glass with each design):

    • COW (Mahogany)
    • GOAT (British Racer Green)
    • GOOSE (Amber)
    • HORSE (Smoke)
    • PIG (Fuchsia)
    • RABBIT (Purple)
    • ROOSTER (Burnt Orange)
    • SHEEP (Peacock)
    • TURKEY (Ink)
    • TRACTOR (Red)

Each mouth-blown glass in the collection features an exquisitely hand-engraved image, executed with the meticulous level of detail that typifies all ARTĚL products.

According to ARTĚL founder / director Karen Feldman, the inspiration for this set is rooted in fond childhood memories of school visits to rural farms and petting zoos – and being struck with wonder at the sight of these majestic creatures that were nowhere to be found in her suburban New York hometown, yet seemed familiar all the same.

“We’ve done a number of themed collections over the years,” observes Feldman, “and they are all quite popular. Our clients really seem to love the idea of being able to purchase a ‘matching’ set of glassware that allows each guest to have a unique design on their glass – resulting in a more personalized touch, as well as a fun conversation starter. While several of our other themed sets feature more specific interests (hunting, sports, and so on), this one has a much broader appeal – I mean, seriously, who doesn’t like barnyard animals?”

  • PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – If any creature could be said to evoke the feeling of warm sunshine on a lazy summer day, surely it would be the colorful, elegant, carefree butterfly. This summer, ARTĚL – the globally renowned producer of luxury crystal couture – celebrates these otherworldly insects with BUTTERFLY MEADOW, an exquisitely detailed new design motif that lends a taste of the great outdoors to any home décor setting.

Featuring not only richly engraved butterflies but also interwoven blossoms and vines, BUTTERFLY MEADOW is quite similar in style to the firm’s highly popular VERDURE motif. Like VERDURE, the new motif was inspired by the wallpaper designs of Dagobert Peche, a prominent member of the Wiener Werkstätte (an early 20th-century community of Austrian designers working in the fields of ceramics, fashion, jewelry, furniture, and the graphic arts).

According to ARTĚL founder / director Karen Feldman, “anyone who knows me knows that while I’m a huge fan of decorative arts from the Wiener Werkstätte in general, I’m just crazy about that Dagobert Peche! I really think he is quite possibly the best decorative artist of all time, and every one of his designs are just so visually interesting. On a recent visit to the fantastic Neue Gallery in NYC, I happened to see an example of Peche wallpaper with beautifully stylized butterflies and flowers, and I immediately felt compelled to create yet another glass motif that pays homage to his unique vision. The result is a look that is timelessly chic and simply perfect for outdoor cocktail parties or al fresco dining.”

  • PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – No matter where you live, as the saying goes, it’s a jungle out there. This winter, ARTĚL – the globally renowned producer of luxury crystal couture – is introducing JUNGLE DECO, a meticulously detailed new design motif that lends an exotic taste of the tropics to any home décor setting.

With its boldly stylized depiction of leafy palm trees, spiky lotus plants, and trailing vines, the newly available motif effortlessly evokes a lush jungle scene, making it especially suitable for al fresco dining on hot summer evenings. At the same time, the precision and intricate detail of the hand-engraved imagery that surrounds each piece makes JUNGLE DECO more than appropriate for even the most formal occasion.

According to ARTĚL founder / director Karen Feldman, one source of inspiration for the new motif was Maurice Sendak’s illustrations in his classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are, a favorite from her childhood. Another was Karl Lagerfeld’s cutting-edge set design for Chanel’s spring 2015 couture collection show at the Grand Palais in Paris, which featured an elaborate jungle arboretum made entirely of white cardboard and brightly colored paper.

“From the moment I saw Lagerfeld’s ingenious set design for the Chanel show, I knew at once that I needed to make a motif that would convey a similar sense of elegant wildness,” says Feldman. “The new design achieves that goal and adds a touch of Art Deco-era sensibility to create a look that is timelessly chic. It is one of those motifs, like our popular VERDURE, that is absolutely perfect in any color and appears at home in a wide range of settings.”

  • From the early Renaissance through the Victorian era, aristocrats and scholars throughout Europe created and displayed ornate “cabinets of curiosities.” These collections of taxidermy, skins, skeletons, and other exotic natural artifacts enthralled contemporary viewers by exposing them to the wonders and oddities of the natural world.
